چکیده
Quantitative cineangiocardiographic technics have been utilized to determine left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) volumes and LV muscle mass in 58 patients with isolated ventricular septal defect, 14 of whom were infants less than 2 years old, and in 25 patients with isolated patent ductus arteriosus, 13 of whom were infants. Patients were divided according to the degree of left-to-right shunt into small (< 35%), moderate (35 to 50%), and large (> 50%) shunt groups. Data obtained in both the VSD and the PDA groups were compared with normal values. Left ventricular end-diastolic volume and mass and LA maximal volumes in the patients of both groups who had shunts of 35% or more were greater than normal and showed a linear increase with increasing left-toright shunt. The LV ejection fraction was decreased from normal in infants with either VSD or PDA and a shunt of more than 50%. This variable was normal in older children with either VSD or PDA. Patients with an aortic or a ventricular defect and equivalent shunts did not differ significantly in terms of LV end-diastolic volume, LV mass, LV ejected fraction, or LA maximal volume, normalized for body surface area. Patients with a patent ductus demonstrated the following differences when compared with patients with ventricular septal defect: (1) elevated LV end-diastolic pressure, (2) elevated LV end-diastolic stress, and (3) elevated value for LV mass (/m2 BSA) per degree of shunt in children over 2 years of age with a patent ductus (P < 0.05). These results indicate that left ventricular distensibility is decreased in patients with aortic left-to-right shunts compared to that in patients with ventricular left-to-right shunts of equivalent magnitude.

Acute Epidural Hematoma after Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Insertion: a Case Report
Background & Importance: Acute epidural hematoma is a very rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. The insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt can cause sudden decompression of the brain, subsequent to which epidural hematoma occurs due to CSF drainage. To our knowledge, there are only a few cases of acute epidural hematoma in the literature which required acute e...
متن کاملRadionuclide shuntography in a hydrocephalic patient
Radionuclide shuntography is a safe and simple method to determine shunt patency and analyze changes in CSF (Cerebro-Spinal-Fluid) flow. We present a case of complicated CSF shunt, in which radioisotopic scan correctly identified disconnection of the shunt tubing system localizing the site of extravasation accurately. The findings were confirmed by surgery performed for correction of the ...
متن کاملDetection of peritoneal pseudocyst following ventriculo-peritoneal shunt by radionuclide method [Persian]
A 14 years old boy who had a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt since the age of 5 months, was hospitalized due to headaches, nausea, vomiting and abdominal distension. In abdominal CT and sonographic evaluation, pancreatic pseudocyst or mesentric cyst were suspected. Evaluation of the shunt by radionuclide, however, was diagnostic and revealed a pseudocyst at the peritoneal end of the shunt. Th...
متن کاملبررسی عوارض اعمال جراحی شنت مغزی برای هیدروسفالی در بیمارستان دکتر شریعتی طی سال های 1375 الی 1378
In this study we tried to assess the incidence rate of shunt complications and it's association with age, sex, location of shunt, duration of surgery, and so on. For this purpose in a prospective study, 82 cases of hydrocephalus after shunt insertion, during the period of two years (1375-1377) in Shariati hospital were selected and all the complications were evaluated. From the patients, 39 cas...
متن کاملA Novel Reference Current Calculation Method for Shunt Active Power Filters using a Recursive Algebraic Approach
This paper presents a novel method to calculate the reference source current and the referencecompensating current for shunt active power filters (SAPFs). This method first calculates theamplitude and phase of the fundamental load current from a recursive algebraic approach blockbefore calculating the displacement power factor. Next, the amplitude of the reference mains currentis computed with ...
متن کاملUnusual Migration of the Distal Catheter of a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt into the Vagina
Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is one of the most common pediatric neurosurgical procedures. It has various complications that may have serious consequences such as shunt dysfunction, and unusual migration. Although, migration of shunt catheter to bladder, heart, umbilicus, rectum, pulmonary artery, and stomach has been reported, migration to vagina is a rare one.In this report we present a 16...
